Butch Lee, Mayor of the City of Brandon, was elected Chairman of the Jackson Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) at the February 8th Jackson MPO Policy Committee meeting.  The Jackson MPO is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the three metro-area counties (Hinds, Madison, and Rankin).  Under federal legislation, MPO’s provide a forum where local officials, public transportation providers and state agency representatives come together and cooperatively plan to meet the region’s current and future transportation needs.  The Jackson MPO oversees regional transportation planning efforts and allocates spending millions of Federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funds for local projects.

“A well-functioning transportation network is essential to our quality of life here in the metro-area,” said Lee, who joined the MPO Policy Committee in 2013.  “I look forward to working in my new capacity as Chairman to improve mobility and infrastructure throughout the region.”

The MPO Policy Committee is comprised of elected and appointed representatives from the counties and cities in the Jackson Urbanized Area.  The Policy Committee provides guidance and leadership on a wide range of planning, policy, and administrative transportation issues.  Butch Lee replaces Mayor Knox Ross of Pelahatchie who served as MPO Chairman since May 2013.
