The Central Mississippi Planning and Development District Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) announced on Wednesday the selection of 22 transportation projects to receive more than $34.1 million in federal grant funding throughout the Jackson metropolitan area.

Combined with more than $15 million in local matching funds, the selected projects represent a total investment of more than $49 million dedicated to improving the region’s transportation infrastructure.

The MPO grants support a wide variety of transportation improvement projects across the metro area. Some projects address system capacity and congestion reduction, including intersection improvements at Gluckstadt Road and Calhoun Station Parkway and the widening of Yandell Road. Other projects focus on preserving and improving existing infrastructure through mill and overlay improvements on roadways such as Old Canton Road in Jackson, Pinehaven Drive in Clinton, and Louis Wilson Drive in Brandon.  Additional projects emphasize roadway safety improvements, including the addition of a raised median on Highway 51 in Ridgeland and construction of a roundabout on East Metro Parkway in Flowood. The selected projects also support expanded multimodal transportation options through improvements such as the addition of a multi-use path along Flowood Drive from Airport Road to Liberty Road.

“These projects represent significant investments in the transportation network that serves residents, businesses, and visitors throughout the metro area,” said Mike Monk Chief Executive Officer of CMPDD. “By supporting projects that improve safety, mobility, system preservation, and multimodal connectivity, the MPO continues to advance transportation improvements that strengthen the region’s overall quality of life and long-term economic vitality.”

Funding for these projects is available through the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) Program, which consists of federal transportation funds allocated annually by the U.S. Department of Transportation to urbanized areas with populations exceeding 50,000. In the metropolitan area, STBG funds are administered by CMPDD through the MPO transportation planning process.

Eligible jurisdictions in Hinds, Madison, and Rankin Counties submitted applications to CMPDD in January 2026. CMPDD staff evaluated applications based on project category-specific criteria and assigned project scores accordingly. The highest-scoring projects formed the basis of recommendations presented to the MPO Policy Committee, which approved funding for 22 projects during its May 13 meeting.
